On our Cederberg and Karoo KTM adventure tour we travel through so many amazing places. Below we discuss just a few of them, as part of our Cederberg motorcycle routes.
Kagga Kamma
Breathe in the cool breeze and soak up the quiet surrounding of the reserve. Besides providing visitors with stunning landscapes and absolute tranquility, Kagga Kamma offers so much. It includes luxury accommodation, South African cuisine, and fascinating tours and activities. The Cederberg area is unique in that it includes an intact Karoo-like ecosystem where tourists can see beautiful wildflowers and tiny plants never seen elsewhere. Equally special is the Kagga Kamma which offers similar nature-like experiences and services to visitors. Select from a range of accommodation styles from their “Cave” Suites, the Open Air Rooms Star Suite and Sky Suite, and comfortable Hut Suites. These are such great places to visit when you book with a motorcycle rental Cape Town can be proud of.
Gannaga Lodge
Gannaga Lodge is situated within Tankwa National Park, on 20 hectares of soil on its own land. It is located atop the majestic Gannaga Road of the Roggeveld Karoo, in some of the most beautiful sceneries of the Northern Cape. The Lodge sits 28 kilometers north of the gravel road between Ceres and Middelpos. Middelpos itself is centered between Calvinia and Sutherland on the R354, about halfway down there. Gannaga Lodge is the only establishment inside the National Park boundaries that provides bed and breakfast lodging, half-board and full-board facilities, as well as restaurant and bar facilities.
Recently, the Tankwa National Park (formerly Tankwa-Karoo National Park) was significantly expanded by land acquisition both above and below the Gannaga Dam. While the park can not include the major five, it does have a range of small mammals, bird and plant life, and two entirely different forms of Karoo flora, wildlife and ecology (above and below Gannaga Pass).
Calvinia, Upper Karoo
This beautiful town of Karoo lies in one of the main wool-producing districts in South Africa, about halfway between Cape Town and Upington. The Calvinia Museum, located in an old art deco house on Church Lane, focuses on the animals, lodging, and lifestyle of the early settlers. The Museum Tourism Office arranges coordinated walking tours to the area’s numerous areas of interest. Two paths across the Akkerendam Nature Reserve provide opportunities to appreciate the beautiful flowers found only in this area. The Hamtam Meat Festival is a festival held in Calvinia each year during the last week of August. Calvinia is a town we visit often and many people book a motorcycle rental Cape Town, to take in all its splendour.
Wupperthal
Known by others as South African gastronomy founder Louis Leipoldt, and the renowned Afrikaans poet. The rock formations along this part of the route are amazing. Wupperthal is a small city in the Cederberg Mountains which was established by two German missionaries in 1830. The name came from Wupper Creek in Germany, from where the missionaries first arrived. As far as entertainment is concerned, the city itself doesn’t offer too much – you go here to refresh your batteries, read the book you haven’t had time to pick up for months, spend time with your nearest and dearest, go on leisurely walks and immerse yourself in the country environment.
Alternatively you could go hiking (the veld is coated in virgin fynbos-look out for snow protea, rocket pincushion and Clanwilliam Cedar), mountain biking, or bird watching. If you’re an experienced in a KTM adventure tour, you could try the Tra-Travallei Route. It is a one-way road although it has escape routes and has a 3-4 star ranking. This is really a great place for a KTM adventure tour.
